Unlocked Futures
Pollen Initiative is a nonprofit organization that provides journalism and multimedia training, resources, and distribution support to build a sustainable prison press.
Year Founded: 2023
Pollen Initiative incubates and supports the development of multimedia training programs and platforms in prisons to promote civic engagement and transparency into the criminal justice system.
Since prison newspapers emerged in the mid-19th century, most operated with few resources and were rarely read beyond prison walls.
Pollen Initiative aims to change that by providing prison newsrooms nationwide with the training, resources, and distribution support they need to serve their communities and contribute to the public’s understanding of the criminal justice system.
Pollen Initiative grew out of the necessity to have more incarcerated voices shared with the general public. We believe that incarcerated people’s conditions of confinement, programming opportunities and personal growth are part of our broader community and essential for civic engagement and radical change.
