New Profit was founded around the idea that nonprofit organizations could generate greater impact if they had access to the same kind of patient, flexible capital typically reserved for venture capital-backed startups. Over the past 25+ years, we and others have shown through our ‘venture philanthropy’ approach that it is possible to unleash impact by investing in the health of organizations, not just funding their programs.
We also recognized the importance of investing in leadership coaching for social entrepreneurs and helping them with strategic management and planning. And, in line with our belief that transformational change requires that we collaborate with diverse, multigroup communities, we prioritize facilitating connections and convenings for the leaders in our portfolio.
We continue to learn, refine, and optimize our offerings to each social entrepreneur we have the privilege of supporting. Specifically, we pull three ‘levers for impact’ that connect organizations to the financial, knowledge, and relational capital that is critical for organizational growth, sustainability, and impact.
Three levers for impact
We support social entrepreneurs and their organizations through our multifaceted approach.
We provide unrestricted funds so organizations can allocate resources toward the greatest impact and long-term sustainability. We primarily fund organizations with leaders who are guided by their constituents yet have been overlooked by philanthropy.
We invest in leadership coaching for social entrepreneurs, advise on Board development, and support strategic management and planning to help organizations achieve their goals.
We increase collaboration through M.I.C.™-centric coalitions to build the connective tissue between social entrepreneurs and aligned stakeholders. We share insights with the field, host and participate in convenings, and engage in policy advocacy.
