Vocal Justice’s mission is to inspire and prepare youth to become lifelong leaders for liberation
Year Founded: 2020
Vocal Justice inspires and prepares youth to become lifelong leaders for liberation by providing educators with storytelling curriculum and professional development that helps them strengthen students’ community, critical consciousness, and communication skills.
Vocal Justice cultivates learning spaces where youth strengthen their community, critical consciousness, and communication skills by providing educators with:
- Storytelling for Social Change Curriculum: 30 lesson plans that teachers integrate into their classrooms to help students grow their self-awareness, social justice knowledge, and advocacy skills
- Professional Learning: Interactive trainings that help teachers embrace liberatory learning practices.
After teaching public speaking to hundreds of young people — from a New Jersey prison to programs in the Dominican Republic — Shawon knew that the stories we share not only shape how others perceive us, but also how we view ourselves. Vocal Justice equips young people across the country with storytelling tools rooted in social justice, helping them define and share narratives that transform their sense of self and the world around them. New Profit first supported Vocal Justice in 2022 through Civic Lab.
