The Oakland REACH

Education
The Oakland REACH’s mission is to build multi-generational education solutions that liberate families to create lives of their own design, rather than having one chosen for them.
Year Founded: 2016
REACH’s latest innovation is the REACH Parent District. This out-of-system, tech-enabled solution connects families directly with high-impact virtual tutoring and the coaching support needed to drive academic success. REACH aims to increase access to high-dosage tutoring for thousands of families across the country with this solution over the next few years.
By listening to families’ aspirations and building solutions rooted in their needs, REACH has a proven track record of building scalable and sustainable models for educational success. This work aligns with New Profit’s Education strategy and commitment to investing in initiatives that recognize the invaluable expertise of families, youth, and community and leverage their insights to co-create solutions that are responsive, relevant, and inclusive.
Part of REACH’s proven track record includes the Liberator Model, an in-system solution that launched as a partnership with their local district in Oakland, CA, to recruit and train parents and caregivers from their lowest-performing communities to be paid literacy and math tutors.
Founded in 2016, The Oakland REACH began in Oakland, CA, and is scaling its work to more communities across the country. REACH has replicated the Liberator Model in Colorado, Oregon, and New York, and is working to enroll students in the REACH Parent District nationwide.
REACH’s solutions have been featured in local, national, and international media, including Today.com, TIME Magazine, CNN, and The 74.
Impact Highlights:
- The REACH Parent District pilot drove higher engagement than districts using the same providers and helped many students double their reading growth.
- Through the Liberator Model, The Oakland REACH has supported the training and retention of 135+ parents/caregivers to deliver high-dosage tutoring to over 4,000 students across 66 schools in Oakland.
- A Center on Reinventing Public Education study of the Liberator Model found it to be just as effective as teacher-led tutoring.
