Rural Opportunity Institute’s mission is to support youth, organizations, and communities to interrupt the cycle of generational trauma and design innovative solutions for healing and resilience.
Year Founded: 2017
Rural Opportunity Institute builds capacity in rural North Carolina communities to interrupt generational trauma, support healing and resilience, and achieve health, safety, connection, and self-determination for youth and organizations.
Rural Opportunity Institute’s theory of change rests on four pillars:
- Centering the community by developing deep relationships and co-designing solutions with members who have lived experience.
- Working in rural areas to reverse underinvestment and design innovative solutions that can work anywhere.
- Applying systems and design thinking to operationalize community-centered approaches that identify highest-leverage actions addressing root causes.
- Focusing on trauma and resilience work in rural Eastern North Carolina through the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale and partnerships with public agencies to co-create solutions supporting healing.
Vichi and Seth gained understanding of rural Eastern North Carolina’s resilience and systemic challenges while teaching through Teach for America (2010-2012), sparking curiosity about how human-centered design could address educational and health inequities. Funded by a seed grant, they convened twelve local leaders to listen to community members—parents, youth, educators, and officials—to understand their experiences and identify challenges facing young and isolated parents. This process uncovered a pervasive pattern: unaddressed trauma as the core underlying challenge affecting almost every aspect of life in the community. The community identified a high-leverage antidote—replacing punitive practices with restorative responses that build resilience at individual, organizational, and community levels. Their work centers on removing barriers to healing by fostering connection in networks that support restoration.
