Community As Medicine participants and coaches practicing fun, playful physical activity together

Open Source Wellness’ (OSW) mission is to create “Community as Medicine” by partnering with communities and healthcare to deliver joyful, trauma-informed, and culturally relevant programs for health, wellbeing, and human connection.

Year Founded: 2016

Community as Medicine™ is an equity-driven coaching model designed to support people as they learn to make and meet their health and wellbeing goals – while experiencing profound human connection.

OSW’s coaching model evolved over years through their work in clinical and community settings with diverse populations. The experiential approach deepens the value of individual coaching and shines in a group coaching setting where participants connect with each other, and practice skills related to wellbeing (physical activity, healthy nutrition, stress reduction, social connection)  in addition to the support they receive from their coach. The OSW model seeks to create accessibility, seamless integration between clinical providers and community-based services, and sustainable transformation of health and wellbeing for populations most in need.

OSW started as a grassroots volunteer organization. It was born out of the knowledge that our healthcare system predictably fails our most vulnerable communities. CoFounders Dr. Elizabeth Markle and Dr. Benjamin Emmert-Aronson convened a group of dedicated, passionate folks to demonstrate another way.
