Memphis Artists for Change (MAC) is an arts-centered, community and economic development organization. Memphis Artists for Change weaves arts into the creation of opportunities for community-sanctioned change in underserved neighborhoods.
Year Founded: 2012
MAC aids in community and economic development through mitigation of the impacts of food insecurity and other environmental injustices, encouraging civic engagement, as well as developing and promoting arts-centered programming in underserved communities. Through this work, MAC aims to increase the ability of communities to thrive.
Since its inception, MAC has evolved from a service-based organization to an entity that addresses environmental injustice in concert with the communities they serve.
Tameka Daniel (Greer) founded MAC in 2012 with the goal of empowering communities to embrace their identity. She realized that the artists in her network could lead community service initiatives. She encouraged artists and partnering organizations to collaborate and help fulfill community goals. As a group, they determined that the areas of focus would be to lessen the impacts of poverty and assist families in need.
Since its founding, MAC has volunteered thousands of service hours at the MidSouth Food Bank, furnished homes of families transitioning from homelessness, and provided hundreds of families with food assistance. MAC has awarded grant funding for small neighborhood organizations and individuals in need and has supported other non-profit organizations via service hours.
