Life After Release’s mission is to build a movement among Black women and families to abolish the criminal legal system, rebuild our devastated communities, and keep each other safe through community safety alternatives.
Year Founded: 2017
Life After Release supports formerly incarcerated individuals by providing access to education, job training, housing assistance, and legal support. They also focus on advocacy efforts to reform policies and reduce barriers to reintegration.
Life After Release, offers a variety of programs and projects designed to support and empower formerly incarcerated individuals. Their initiatives include educational workshops, job training programs, housing assistance, and legal aid services. They also engage in community outreach and advocacy to address systemic issues and promote policy reforms. Their dedicated team works collaboratively to provide comprehensive support and resources, helping individuals successfully reintegrate into society and lead fulfilling lives.
Life After Release began behind bars. In 2017, incarcerated Black mothers began organizing to address deplorable prison conditions and build a hopeful, self-determined life after release. With a lack of state-provided transitional support and services, they understood that it was their responsibility to build a movement with directly impacted community members to change the inequitable systems that trapped us in a cycle of policing, supervision, and incarceration. Theirwork is based in the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) metro area, but it extends far beyond – setting a leading example for community-based safety and care alternatives on a national scale.
