Black Teacher Collaborative

BTC’s mission is to engage, develop, and support a collective of Black educators who will ensure that Black children achieve at high levels academically while simultaneously preparing them with the intellectual, social, emotional, and cultural capital to actively participate in the ongoing advancement of their communities.

BTC believes the Black teacher is the most powerful agent of change in schools. We ground our four-pronged approach in the ability of Black Teachers to transform education for Black children and the commitment to producing evidence of their impact. 

BTC’s Anchors are:

• Pedagogy – We have created and continue to refine a distinct framework for an approach to teaching and learning for Black teachers of Black students.
• Research and Influence – Through our programs and by lifting up the work of others, we can create evidence of impact that can influence the full educational system.
• Training and Resources – We manage an “Impact Portfolio” of programs, products, services, and tools for teachers that activate our pedagogy.
• Partnerships – We engage partners to create an ecosystem around our work, which allows us to expand our reach efficiently and to influence other contexts where Black children learn.

Beyond developing evidence of the value of its support model, BTC aspires to expand knowledge of how the presence of well-trained Black teachers can influence the racial identity, emotional health, and intellectual development of Black students. This is a complex conceptual and measurement undertaking, but one that offers the promise of providing new evidence about how to help Black students succeed.
