New Profit Statement on The Shootings in Buffalo, Dallas, and Laguna Woods
New Profit condemns the horrific acts of terrorism in Dallas, Buffalo, and now Laguna Woods. Violence has no place in our society and any instance of hatred directed at individuals on account of their racial, ethnic, religious, sexual, or cultural identity is destructive to our shared humanity. We stand with the victims, their families, and communities as they deal with this unimaginable trauma.
That these attacks occurred in the weeks and days leading up to the two-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder makes clear the racial reckoning that seemed to follow has yet to be realized. As the United States of America nears its 250th anniversary, what should be a unifying milestone is overshadowed by a growing sense of fear and fragmentation. The perpetuation of racism and bigotry is antithetical to this nation’s founding ideals. What is needed in this moment is a willingness to recognize our interdependence — to not only see but to acknowledge our shared humanity.
We believe that in order to create an America where everyone can thrive, we must build relationships across the cultural, economic, and ideological lines that often divide us. This is an idea that, today, feels counter-culture. But as an organization, we are committed to bringing together a multi-racial and intergenerational coalition of stakeholders to imagine, design, and architect a more just and equitable society.
